Chiba University: Field Study on Thailand Society and Economy (East) February – March 2024

From 27 February – to 8 March 2024, Sophia GED operated a study tour “Chiba University: Field Study on Thailand Society and Economy” for Prof. Hikari Ishido and Prof. Keiko Ito and 30 Japanese students from Chiba University.

Start with a welcome dinner near the airport!  

Sophia GED has a little special gift for Chiba University students too!

In this program, we have been to different areas of Thailand such as Ayutthaya, Bangkok, and Chonburi to learn various perspectives of Thailand’s society and economy.

Start by visiting Ayutthaya to learn about Thai old history, Thai Buddhism, and Thai culture. Including the experience of riding an elephant around Ayutthaya, which has been Thailand’s beloved animal for a long time.

In addition, visit the local “Baan Sainoi Community ” local community to learn about community life through many activities such as learning about Thai massage, making Thai dessert called Thong Yod-Foi Thong, making Thai herbal, making Thai local embroidery thread, etc. 

Moreover, exploring the lives of people in the community, learning how to make bricks by yourself to build a house, and planting agricultural vegetables in the community. Including living in the community for one night.

Moving to Bangkok, We start by learning about the socioeconomic situation in ASEAN and Thailand by a Thai professor from Chulalongkorn University.

Furthermore, the students were able to experience life in the Bangkok area with Thai students from various universities and exchange cultures between Japan and Thailand.

In addition, they learned about social problems that are common in Bangkok via their own experiences in slum areas.

Students also got to explore the global business of Japanese business initiatives invested in Thailand by visiting Koikeya, a Japanese organization located in Thailand.

Lastly, we went to learn in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) area, Chonburi. We visited Leam Chabang Deep Seaport to learn about government strategies for economic development, and Pattaya to learn about tourism economics.
