From February 9 to 18, 2025, Sophia GED proudly hosted the Hokkaido University of Education: Thailand Field Study Program, led by Professor Arii and joined by 16 participating students.

Throughout the program, students traveled across various parts of Thailand, including Bangkok in the central region and Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north. The purpose was to engage deeply with the diverse cultures, ways of life, and traditions of each area through a field study approach.

The program started in Bangkok, where students worked together with Thai university students on fieldwork activities. Through these activities, they were able to share their cultures and learn from each other. Students also had an opportunity to explore Bangkok on their own, visiting places that matched their personal interests.

Next, the group traveled overnight by train to Chiang Mai, providing an opportunity to experience the geographical and cultural transitions within Thailand.

In Chiang Rai Province, students visited the Rung Arun organization, where they participated in activities promoting sustainable living, such as organic farming. They also engaged with local communities through cultural exchange programs featuring traditional dance performances, local games, and visits to community markets.

One of the program highlights was a homestay experience in Hinladnai, an ethnic minority village. Students lived with host families from the Karen community, learning firsthand about their language, daily life, and cultural practices. Activities such as traditional fabric weaving, natural dyeing, and hiking through the scenic mountainous landscape offered a deeper connection to the community’s way of life.

Finally, The program wrapped up with a visit to Chiang Mai City, renowned for its bustling tourist spots and lively markets.

We believe that the insights and experiences gained throughout these 10 days have greatly enriched the participants’ understanding of Thailand. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all students and collaborators for making this program a memorable and rewarding journey.
